For over twenty years, I have worked in education - an area I remain passionate about - in which active, conscious listening, understanding, empathising and carefully considered questioning are key to making the biggest difference to anyone you work with.
My ability to relate to others has been central to my success and fulfilment as a teacher, senior leader, CPD facilitator, training provider, tutor, mentor and coach.
Education has enabled me to work with hundreds of students, colleagues and parents in three continents and develop a broad, global understanding of people from a wide range of backgrounds. This international perspective helps me to empathise with anyone, including those with whom I share little in common.
I’m naturally interested to learn about, and from, people with different backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs and traditions. I am comfortable in being wrong and having my mind changed! This open mind - this willingness to understand - I believe, is part of what makes me an effective coach who can make a big, deep difference to my clients.
Another gift that teaching has given me has been the dynamic thinking, deliberate, impactful improvisation and the ability to adapt plans on the fly, required to respond effectively to the constantly evolving challenges presented by the thirty individuals of a class. As a coach, I use these skills to powerfully respond to what the client brings to the session and have the biggest impact on their thinking.
Understanding their personality: their motives, hopes, fears, values, inspirations, hobbies, tastes; allows you to cater learning to each student’s needs and support their overall growth. The same principles of deeply understanding the individual are central to coaching!
A good educator understands that continuous self-reflection, peer support and regular training are required to upgrade, evolve and continue to excel in any endeavour and this is especially true for a professional coach. I recently attained my ACC qualification with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), regularly give and receive peer-coaching support, and am a member of several coaching online groups and forums with general or specialist interests. I love the feeling I get when I learn something new that will make me a better coach for my clients!
